Job Description

Junior Sister – Somerset Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust

If you are an experienced neonatal nurse ready to advance your career, this could be the perfect next step. Somerset Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is looking for a compassionate, confident Junior Sister to join our dedicated team. This is a role where your clinical expertise, leadership, and empathy will directly shape the experience of sick and preterm infants—and the families who rely on us during their most vulnerable moments.

What This Role Involves

As a Junior Sister, you will take charge of nursing teams during shifts, supporting the smooth delivery of care across intensive, high-dependency, and special care areas. You’ll work closely with parents and carers, providing guidance and emotional support while helping them gain confidence in caring for their baby.

Your leadership will extend beyond patient care—you’ll also mentor junior colleagues, contribute to service development, and help maintain a positive, safe, and high-quality clinical environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate nursing teams during shifts
  • Deliver specialised neonatal interventions such as neonatal life support, blood gas sampling, venepuncture, and cannulation
  • Support and teach parents, building their confidence throughout their baby’s care journey
  • Communicate sensitive and complex information with compassion and clarity
  • Supervise, teach, and mentor junior staff and students
  • Ensure adherence to safeguarding procedures, infection control policies, and Trust guidelines
  • Take part in multidisciplinary meetings and discharge planning
  • Act as deputy for the Sister in Charge when required

  • Opportunities for career development, training, and progression
  • Blue Light Card membership, offering a wide range of discounts
