A rewarding opportunity has become available for an experienced children’s nurse to join our Band 6 team within the vibrant and fast-paced Children’s Emergency Department at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital. We are looking for a professional who already has experience in a Children’s ED setting and is ready to take the next step in leadership.
About the Role
As a Band 6 nurse, you will work closely with our Band 7 team, taking the lead on shifts with their guidance and support. You will play a key role in ensuring that children, young people, and their families receive safe, compassionate, high-quality emergency care.

What We Are Looking For
We are seeking a highly experienced, motivated, and diligent Children’s Emergency Department (CED) nurse who can deliver excellent evidence-based care while supporting and guiding junior colleagues. You will be a visible leader on shift, contributing to a safe, efficient department and helping us meet key clinical quality indicators, KPIs, and national performance standards.
What You Will Do
Clinical Leadership & Expertise
- Provide expert clinical care to children and young people, using advanced decision-making skills.
- Model best practice and act as a clinical role model for the wider CED nursing team.
- Uphold all current NMC professional standards across your practice.
Emergency Assessment & Prioritisation
- Confidently triage patients on arrival using recognised triage tools.
- Prioritise care based on clinical urgency and presentation.
- Redirect suitable cases to GP services accessible directly through the department.
- Undertake comprehensive physical assessments and escalate concerns promptly.
Mental Health Care
- Use sensitivity and professional skill when assessing and communicating with children and young people presenting with mental health needs.
Coordination & Department Management
- Act as Nurse in Charge when required, overseeing patient safety, flow, and prioritisation.
- Continually assess and reassess deteriorating patients, escalating concerns as needed.
- Attend paediatric trauma calls in the adult ED alongside the medical team, advocating for the child or young person.
Emergency Preparedness
- Maintain competence in paediatric advanced life support.
- Be fully familiar with major incident procedures.
- Understand and support the child death process, signposting staff to wellbeing and emotional support services where necessary.
