Job Description

Job Introduction

East Sussex Children’s Service

East Sussex Children’s Services has an excellent track record of staff joining us and then wanting to stay – we don’t just say this; it’s true – we have one of the best social work retention rates in England.

People stay for a variety of reasons, including: first, we recruit the right people; second, we provide our workforce with the necessary resources and opportunities for practice development; third, we fully engage with children, parents, and carers in service improvement and development; and fourth, we do everything we can to create an inclusive and diverse environment in which wellbeing is prioritised.

As a Lead Social Worker, you will take the lead in supporting a workplace that fosters these conditions, including leading social work and early help recruitment and retention, developing our Connected Practice model of practice, and continuing to develop our high-quality workforce development strategy. You will not be doing this alone; you will be supported by a dedicated social work education team as well as a recruitment and retention staff that you will supervise. You will collaborate closely with practitioners and senior leaders in adult services, as well as community partners, including universities.

About You

As a Principal Social Worker, you must have a high level of professional credibility gained via a diverse range of social care experience, including considerable management experience. You will have a thorough understanding of theory and research, as well as how they apply in practice. You will be quite comfortable sharing this knowledge both internally and in the larger community.

You will need to lead through influence, so you must be energetic, resourceful, enthusiastic, and highly motivated, with a track record of strategic practice development and improvement.

You will feel equally at ease dealing with senior managers and members as you do with frontline staff, children, and families. You will be able to drive service improvement and innovation on a strategic level. Providing high support and challenge to maintain great quality practice while remaining attentive to the needs of children, families, and carers.

You will have a degree in social work, preferably with extra advanced training related to the position.
