Senior Highways Engineer – Capital

We’re looking for a talented Senior Highways Engineer – Capital to step into a key leadership role within our highways team.
In this position, you will serve as the primary designer and technical lead, guiding a group of skilled engineers and technicians. Your focus will be on delivering high-quality highway engineering solutions for both council-led initiatives and external partners, from initial concept through to successful completion.
What You Will Be Doing:
- Taking the lead in designing highway maintenance, upgrade, and improvement projects to high standards.
- Overseeing capital-funded schemes, including preparing comprehensive designs and managing their progression.
- Offering expert technical guidance and professional input to colleagues, partners, and stakeholders.
- Exploring creative, forward-thinking approaches to address emerging infrastructure demands and support sustainable growth.
- Coordinating with contractors, while mentoring and supporting your team of engineers and technicians.
- Keeping close track of project budgets and making effective use of tools such as AutoCAD and asset management platforms.
- Making informed technical judgments on scheme impacts, feasibility, and delivery.
Building strong, clear communication channels with everyone involved inside the council and beyond.

What We are Looking For:
- A degree (or equivalent) in civil engineering or a closely related field.
- Substantial hands-on experience leading and delivering complex highway improvement schemes.
- Proven track record collaborating with external consultants, contractors, and private sector developers.
- Solid technical expertise, sound professional judgment, and confidence in decision-making.
- Proficiency with design software (especially AutoCAD) and highway asset systems.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
