Division Manager, Natural Areas

East Kentucky University

Title: Division Manager of Natural Areas.

Position Type: Full-Time Staff

Search Type: Internal, minimum 5 days.

Job Summary/Basic Functions

The EKU Division of Natural Areas Division Manager is in charge of protecting, managing, and educating about natural resources under Eastern Kentucky University’s jurisdiction at all Division of Natural Area Sites, which include Lilley Cornett Woods Appalachian Ecological Research Station, Maywoods Environmental and Educational Laboratory, Taylor Fork Ecological Area, and Cardinal Lane Outdoor Laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in natural science, natural resources, park administration, or comparable subject.

Three years of relevant job experience are required.

Licensure and Certifications: Valid driver’s license is required.

Preferred qualifications:

Job Duties:

25% – Natural Area Management. Facilities: Supervise, assess, and conduct maintenance/repairs on structures, equipment, roadways, and trails. Manage all EKU facilities services and contracted projects. Administer the organisation of all facilities to satisfy the demands of guests, ensuring proper and effective utilisation. – (Essential)

25% – Resource management: Maintain and protect the integrity of the properties. Serve as a bridge between EKU and local, state, national, and non-governmental entities for natural resource management and protection. Oversee, report, and coordinate the monitoring, protection, and treatment of sensitive and invasive species; Supervise and report weather observations through the National Weather Service and the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (Essential).

25% – Offer Visitor, Research, and Environmental Education Support: Assist in the establishment and delivering educational programs done at the Natural Areas (K-12, University, professional); Develop and offer guided treks and unique events in all natural areas. Training guides at Lilley Cornett Woods for regularly scheduled treks; Assist with the development and research undertaken at the Natural Areas. Assist in recruiting groups to the natural regions – (essential).

15% – Resource Crew/Volunteer Coordination: Oversee the seasonal Crew Coordinator and assist with the recruiting, training, placement, and activities of students as part of resource management crews. Create a volunteer program and provide training; keep track of the tool inventory in the resource trailer. – (Essential)

5% – DNA operations support: Perform other activities as assigned, including but not limited to weekly/monthly/yearly reports, supervision of other employees/volunteers, networking, and providing/completing professional development (essential)

5% – Provide Security: Assist Site Managers in developing and maintaining rapport with surrounding landowners and the larger community; Work with Site Managers to handle problems as they arise. Perform any other tasks that may be assigned. – (Essential)
