About the Role

The Engineering Development Programme (EDP) focuses on training the next generation of industry executives and technical specialists. The mission of Caterpillar’s Engineering Development Programme is to harness your talent and further develop you through rotational assignments and learning opportunities, allowing you to not only achieve your career goals but also deliver outstanding service to Caterpillar and its customers. Our Engineering Development Programme is a customisable 12-month programme designed to meet the onboarding needs of engineers and technologists who are hired directly into full-time roles.

What Will You Do?

Caterpillar Inc. is looking for a Structural Simulation Engineer to support Virtual Product Development (VPD) technologies and product development. Primary job tasks may include applying structural system simulation to early product concepts and design decisions, improving current goods, and developing simulation-related processes and technologies. Additional areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to, the following:

Using fundamental engineering knowledge to improve technical abilities and comprehension of the business, product, systems, and procedures.

Assisting in the evaluation and implementation of new or improved processes, products, or systems.

Assisting in the resolution of design, manufacturing, or building sequences for routine procedures and simple products. Helping to ensure design acceptability and manufacturing readiness through communication.

Conducting needs analysis and generating ideas.

The engineer must control his or her own development, constantly learning from experience and keeping up with technological advancements. Learning will concentrate on methods, processes, and systems used in engineering functions, core engineering skills, practical application of theory, communications, and gaining knowledge of Caterpillar’s products, suppliers, and customers.

What You Have: Skills and Experiences

Information Capture

Knowledge of the methods, routes, and processes for gathering required information; capacity to discover, capture, and document relevant business information in an auditable, organised, comprehensible, and easily retrievable style.

Analytical Thinking

Knowledge of procedures and tools that encourage effective analysis; capacity to uncover the fundamental cause of organisational problems and propose alternate solutions to these challenges.

Decision-making and Critical Thinking

Knowledge of the decision-making process, including tools and strategies; capacity to effectively analyse situations and make educated conclusions.

Effective Communications

Understanding of successful communication concepts, methods, and strategies; ability to send, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and demands by utilising suitable communication behaviours.

Technical excellence

Knowledge of a specific technology and its numerous application methods; capacity to develop and implement solutions to substantial technological issues.

Uses flow charts, Pareto charts, fish diagrams, and other data visualisation techniques to reveal important patterns. Uses logic and intuition to make assumptions about the meaning of evidence and draw conclusions.

Engineering – Manufacturing

Knowledge of engineering procedures, techniques, and methods in a manufacturing setting; capacity to develop and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems, and processes that safely achieve a desired goal or invention.

Troubleshooting technical problems.

Knowledge of troubleshooting methods, tools, and procedures; capacity to anticipate, discover, and address technical issues in a manufacturing setting.

Degree Requirement:

A minimum of a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace engineering, or engineering mechanics. Applicants must be studying or have finished one of the above-mentioned or comparable degrees at an accredited school, with a graduation date in 2024 or within the last three years. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0/4.0 (without rounding).

Other requirements:

Coursework or research focuses on finite element theory and methodology.

Data analytics and machine learning techniques have been demonstrated in the context of finite element analysis.

Prior technical internship, co-op, or research/relevant experience.

Nonlinear material and massive deformation, contact/impact, frequency/transient response dynamics. FEA analysis with ABAQUS, NASTRAN, or ANSYS.

Creo or other CAD software applications.

FEA pre/post-processing software includes Hyperworks, ANSA, SimCenter 3D, and others.

Top Candidates will also have:

Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Engineering Mechanics with an academic concentration on structural simulation and/or multi-domain system dynamics modelling.

Previous research in data analytics, machine learning (ML), and reduced order models (ROM) technique applications in the context of finite element analysis

Structural, thermal, and material simulations, validation, and simulation/test integration

Nonlinear bolted joint and fatigue life analysis.

Proven proficiency with simulation programmes such as ABAQUS, ANSYS, NASTRAN, LS-Dyna, NX, Fe-Safe/nCode, Hyperworks, Simlab, Dynasty, TomSim, Adams, and others.

Understanding of mechanical systems (structures, engines, drivetrains, hydraulics, etc.).

Software programming abilities for engineering analysis and process automation.

Strong initiative, communication, customer focus, teamwork, and planning abilities, as well as leadership experience

Additional information:

This position will be based in either Tucson, Arizona or Champaign, Illinois.

Domestic relocation aid is available for this post.
