We are searching for an experienced aerospace Optical Systems Engineer to be responsible for the design, development, and delivery of SSTL’s next generation of spacecraft optical payloads.
We are searching for an experienced aerospace Optical Systems Engineer to be responsible for the design, development, and delivery of SSTL’s next generation of spacecraft optical payloads.
You will be involved in all parts of a mission involving the Optical Payload, from idea to launch and operation in orbit. This important function is frequently part of a mission’s core team and requires interaction with other technical leads from various engineering divisions of the organisation.
Key Tasks
- Conceptually design and oversee the development and certification of space-bound optical systems.
- Work Package Management for many technical aspects of optical systems
- Maintain technical ownership of requirements and specifications for optical payload systems, collaborating with relevant teams to develop derived needs.
- Manage the delivery of complete payloads, including ownership of payload schedules and keeping them in line with mission schedule requirements.
- ‘Hands-on’ technical involvement with the payload and all subsystems’ team members at all development stages, including final assembly, integration, and verification
- Ownership of risk registers and suitable mitigation agreed upon with the project manager.
- Reviewing and criticising optical systems for use in space, balancing technological needs with programmatic and fiscal restrictions.
- Engage directly with clients during frequent project reviews, offering a comprehensive perspective of the optical payload
- Writing and contributing to proposals, supporting future business development from a technical standpoint.
Providing assistance and technical oversight for:
- Optical system architecture definition.
- Optical Design
- Performance Evaluation and Testing
- Subsystem and component specification definition and manufacturing
- Optical system alignment and testing.
Previous Experience
Qualifications Knowledge & Skills
- BSc in Optics, Physics, or similar BEng degree with shown corresponding practical optical or spacecraft expertise.
- Experience with optical design and analysis, including knowledge of Optic Studio (Zemax) and FRED, would be advantageous.
- SolidWorks, Ansys, and SigFit are examples of mechanical design and analysis tools, as are Python and MATLAB for numerical analysis.
- You must be able to produce your error-free work product on schedule.
- Demonstrated capacity to work independently without direct direction or guidance.
- Able to display company mindsets and behaviours, such as accountability, drive and delivery, effective communication, and successful self-management. Work as one team.
