JOB DESCRIPTION
Astroscale UK is recruiting for an AIV Mechanical Engineer to join our brand-new, cutting-edge headquarters in Harwell, UK. You will be intimately involved in the assembly, integration, testing, and launch of the Astroscale spacecraft. This is an opportunity to work in a small and responsive AIV team, with plenty of leeway to develop creative and cost-effective solutions to engineering test difficulties.
Responsibilities
- Leading the delivery of spacecraft and mission-level assembly, integration, and verification.
- (AIV) Mechanical Activities.
- AIV test setup design; MGSE design, development, and commissioning.
- Create and maintain satellite AIV processes, plans, workflows, and timelines based on technical and programmatic requirements.
- Contribute and participate in the AIT reviews (TRR, PTR, and TRB).
- Work in matrixed project teams, contributing to both UK and international missions.
Essential Skills
- HND or higher education qualification in mechanical disciplines.
- 2 years (5 years for Senior) of commercial experience performing spacecraft or mission-level AIV tasks across a variety of mission types.
- Knowledge and experience with the spacecraft/mission AIV process.
- Technical knowledge/understanding of AIV planning, processes, mechanical GSE development, AIT activity setup, operation, and verification (subsystem, system, and environmental level testing).
- Experience and understanding of environmental testing facilities and equipment providers.
- Experienced with mechanical assembly tools and measuring equipment.
- Knowledge of design and execution of environmental test campaigns (particularly, thermal vacuum and mechanical verification campaigns).
- Proactive and self-sufficient, while yet contributing collaboratively to a close-knit team.
- Be eligible and registered to work in the UK and/or Europe.
- Willingness to travel and work extended hours as needed.
Desirable Skills
- Design, produce, and install thermal hardware, including MLI.
- Working knowledge of mechanical test instruments.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities, as well as prior experience working with foreign teams.
- Exhibited leadership and team management skills.
- Well-organized, flexible working style, and adaptable to change.
- Knowledge of and interest in active space debris clearance and missions.
- While English is the working language in all Astroscale divisions, competency in spoken and/or written Japanese is considered a benefit.
