The annual remuneration for this permanent Pre-Operative Assessment Nurse position ranges between £34,865 and £39.225.

Working hours: Monday through Friday, with flexible scheduling choices.

Main Duties:


  • Conduct extensive pre-operative assessments, including as health history reviews, physical examinations, and diagnostic test interpretations, to identify and manage potential hazards.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, anaesthetists, and other healthcare experts to create personalised care plans for patients.
  • Coordinate and schedule all necessary investigations, including as laboratory testing, radiological examinations, and consultations, to ensure timely and accurate results.
  • Assess patients’ psychological and emotional well-being, and offer support and education to reduce anxiety and improve their knowledge of the surgical procedure.
  • Evaluate and optimise patients’ medical conditions to ensure they are fit for surgery, and consult with necessary specialists as needed.
  • Educate patients with pre-operative instructions, post-operative care, and recovery plans to encourage active engagement in their healthcare journey.
  • All assessments, interventions, and communications should be documented clearly and concisely in the electronic medical records system.
  • Monitor and treat any pre-existing medical illnesses or issues, taking the necessary precautions to reduce risks.
  • Participate in quality improvement programmes, helping to establish and execute best practices for pre-operative assessment.
  • Maintain awareness of current evidence-based procedures and recommendations for pre-operative nursing care.


Requirements for the Pre-Operative Assessment Nurse:


  • Registered nurse with a valid and current NMC registration.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in a pre-operative evaluation or surgical nurse capacity.
  • Advanced understanding of surgical methods, anaesthesia, and postoperative nursing care.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to build rapport with patients and work effectively with healthcare teams.
  • Ability to work autonomously while making sound clinical decisions.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and ethical standards in patient treatment.
  • Continuous professional development, which includes participation in relevant training and educational programmes.
