JOB DESCRIPTION

SSTL is looking for a motivated, results-driven, and dedicated mechanisms engineer to support the existing and developing spectrum of space mechanisms utilised on SSTL spacecraft.

The SSTL Mechanisms team is looking for an enthusiastic, results-driven, and dedicated mechanisms engineer to support the existing and developing spectrum of space mechanisms utilised on SSTL spacecraft. This is an incredible chance for an engineer to work on space mechanisms in a stimulating and mission-critical setting!

The position necessitates a high degree of electro-mechanical technical design, analysis, production, and testing, as well as the ability to handle several work packages. The engineer will be able to work on numerous products and impact product offerings to meet the needs of mission-critical projects. A strong engineering competence along with a positive mindset is required… Being a space expert is not!

Mechanisms Engineers encounter numerous problems during spacecraft launch and orbit. Every day is an interesting task because of the attention to detail and ability to assure that what is supplied can run for potentially 15 years with no maintenance and 100% reliability while providing low-cost creative solutions that are designed for manufacture (DFM). SSTL has created a plethora of space mechanisms and is facing the challenge of impending satellite missions.

Not only will SSTL need to manage and upgrade its present product lines (evolution), but it will also need to build new mechanisms at the forefront (revolution).

Important Tasks

  • Design and analysis of new or evolved mechanism products, including collaboration with other divisions of the business on system trade-offs.

  • DFM stands for design for production.

  • Engineering with a hands-on approach, involving development and flight construction, testing, and spacecraft assembly.

  • Managing many tasks and work packages at the same time with shifting priorities.

  • Interaction with internal and external customers, which includes presentations and technical assessments.

  • Creating technical documentation (for example, design reports, procedures, and test reports).

Previous Work Experience

  • SSTL is looking for a graduate with a genuine interest in mechanical and/or mechanisms/mechatronics engineering, or someone with previous mechanical/mechanism/mechatronic engineering experience, particularly in a high reliability setting, who is open for new challenges. It will also help if they can exhibit a strong desire to move to or retain a job in the space sector! The pay would be commensurate with the appropriate experience.

  • Experience in mechanical design of stress-critical components, including precision tolerance analysis, drafting, materials, and manufacturing procedures.

  • Although electronics/software design for flight will be done by other teams at SSTL, awareness and comprehension of the use of electronics and software/firmware in an engineering context, as well as demonstrated ability to help electronics/software engineers test and debug, is a benefit.

Qualifications Knowledge and Abilities

  • MEng, BEng, or an equivalent degree in engineering (mechanical, mechatronic, or similar).

  • An understanding of Design for Manufacture (DFM).

  • Self-motivated, creative, detail-oriented, and accountable.

  • Practical knowledge.

  • Ability to operate individually or as part of a project team(s), as well as in a ‘One Team’ setting.

  • Strong internal communication as well as external communication with customers and suppliers.

  • Ability to operate under pressure and in an orderly manner in a fast-paced environment: optimistic and persistent attitude.

  • adaptive and adaptive to shifting priorities.

  • Understanding of the components that will be used in mechanisms.

  • With design/idealisation aim, it is preferable to have understanding of CAD and FEA software.

  • Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and so on).

  • Capable of demonstrating company mindsets and behaviours such as accountability, driving and delivering, communicating effectively, self-managing well, and working as one team.

Location

The position is headquartered in Guildford, where we have our headquarters as well as manufacturing and testing facilities.

Benefits

Our comprehensive benefits package includes 32 days of vacation plus bank holidays, a pension scheme with life assurance, private medical and international travel insurance, an annual bonus scheme, a share incentive plan, enhanced maternity, paternity, and shared parental pay for new parents, a high street discount scheme, and many other benefits.
