Brighton and Sussex Medical School is seeking a Research Assistant to support an exciting new project focusing on public health intervention for young women who are not in education, employment, or training (NEET) and live in coastal areas of the United Kingdom. The study seeks to investigate the feasibility, efficacy, and cost-effectiveness of a hope-focused intervention. The intervention is founded on the ideas of hope theory and includes elements such as strengths identification, goal planning, and creative expression. The intervention is intended to be supported by an innovative youth-led mentor strategy. The initiative will require collaborating with local and unitary authorities, as well as charity partners, to locate and enrol these young women in the study. The project’s geographic concentration is on impoverished coastal regions in southern and eastern England. The trial includes a mixed-methods process evaluation.
The Trial Manager will supervise the position and report to Dr Clio Berry, the project’s overall lead. The postholder will assist with the day-to-day coordination of the trial. The postholder will assist local/unitary authorities and NGOs in identifying and referring young women to participate in the study. The postholder will engage with young women, obtain consent, and conduct screening evaluations via phone, videoconferencing, and in-person encounters. The postholder will help young women complete baseline and follow-up evaluations. The postholder will gather and record data, as well as provide correct recruitment and assessment results. The experiment is held in a small, pleasant, and research-active department at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. The postholder will be assisted in their professional development, including opportunities for training.
The successful candidate should have a relevant degree and/or equivalent experience, such as working on big and/or difficult health or education research projects. The chosen candidate will need strong communication and presentation abilities, as well as the ability to arrange themselves and work to deadlines. The successful candidate will have some knowledge of the randomised controlled trial methodology. The candidate should have personal experience dealing with vulnerable young people, as well as professional experience working with this group in research, clinical, or support roles.
The role will initially be engaged for 14 months to cover the project’s feasibility phase. Assuming viability, the position would be extended for an additional 2.5 to 3.5 years. Job sharing can be considered. A fraction of remote labour may be considered.
For informal queries, please contact Dr. Clio Berry at c.berry@bsms.ac.uk.
