Job Description
Exciting Opportunity: Consultant Midwife – Maternity Services at University Hospitals Birmingham
We are thrilled to offer an exceptional opportunity to join the Maternity team at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB). Our multisite service provides care to some of the most vulnerable women and families across Birmingham and Solihull, with a focus on complex intrapartum care. In this role, you will collaborate closely with the Consultant Midwife for Midwifery Led Care and Public Health, providing strategic support to the Director of Midwifery and Heads of Midwifery.
The primary aim of this post is to ensure that the senior maternity team is supported with a high level of intellectual and practical expertise. The Consultant Midwives, alongside the senior team, will drive forward improvements in midwifery practice to enhance the quality of care for women and families, in line with national and local policies.
As part of the senior maternity team, you will contribute to the Trust’s Clinical Governance agenda and support the National Maternity Transformation requirements, particularly by offering advice on best practices and supporting the development of staff. You will also promote midwifery audit and research.
UHB is a tertiary referral centre, offering care for women with complex needs, and supports a level 3 neonatal unit at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, which serves as a neonatal cooling centre, in addition to a level 1 neonatal unit at Good Hope Hospital.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
The Consultant Midwife role is underpinned by four principal functions:
1. **Expert Practice**: Providing advanced clinical expertise and leadership in the delivery of maternity care.
2. **Professional Leadership & Consultancy**: Acting as a role model and mentor, inspiring colleagues, and leading improvements in clinical practice.
3. **Education, Training & Development**: Leading on education and professional development initiatives for midwifery staff.
4. **Practice & Service Development, Research & Evaluation**: Driving service improvements through research, audit, and evidence-based practice.
The postholder will spend 50% of their time in a clinically facing role, with the remaining time dedicated to leadership, development, and strategic activities. The balance of these functions may evolve based on service needs, in consultation with the Director of Midwifery and Heads of Midwifery.
Professional Leadership & Consultancy
As a Consultant Midwife, you will:
– Provide visionary leadership and inspire colleagues to improve standards of care and professional practice.
– Support midwives in becoming autonomous practitioners, balancing the recognition of normality with the ability to respond appropriately to complications.
– Act as an accessible resource for midwives, students, and junior medical staff, offering advice, supervision, and debriefing.
– Lead by example, empowering midwives to challenge traditional practices and adopt evidence-based approaches.
– Serve as an expert advisor both internally and externally, acting as an ambassador for UHB’s maternity services, and promoting the Trust as a Centre of Excellence regionally and nationally.
