The Role: On-Train Ticket Examiners
As an On-Train Ticket Examiner, you will be the face of ScotRail for many passengers. Your role is to create a first-class impression and make passengers feel safe, secure, and welcome. Attention to detail is crucial when checking and issuing tickets, handling cash, processing card transactions, and managing other responsibilities that may arise unexpectedly.
In this role, you will assist passengers with disabilities in boarding and alighting trains, which may require using a portable ramp weighing up to 15kg. The ramp may need to be carried the full length of the train, so physical fitness is essential.
Being a “people person” is vital, as this role involves delivering exceptional customer service and thinking on your feet. You will be expected to act with integrity and provide helpful solutions to passengers and staff in various situations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Checking and issuing tickets
- Handling cash and processing card transactions
- Patrolling trains and managing overcrowding
- Assisting passengers with disabilities, including the use of a portable ramp
- Providing excellent customer service and resolving issues
What We’re Looking For:
We seek candidates with experience in cash handling and customer-facing roles. You should be able to work a 35-hour week, including shifts and weekends, with early starts and late finishes.

Your training will take place in Glasgow and will cover various essential skills, including:
- Customer Service
- Commercial Skills
- First Aid
- Fire Safety
- Disability Awareness
- Conflict Management
This comprehensive training will equip you with the tools needed to excel in this varied and interesting role.
Salary and Benefits:
- Reference Salary:
- £30,543 per annum on completion of training
- Trainee Salary:
- £21,193 per annum during training
- Commission:
- 3% on ticket sales
Selection Process:
If selected, candidates will be invited to complete online assessments. Successful candidates will then be interviewed by a local manager. The final stage involves completing a medical questionnaire, submitting at least two satisfactory references, and obtaining Disclosure Scotland clearance. Appointees must complete a six-month probation period.
