JOB DESCRIPTION

 

An interesting opportunity has arisen within Leeds City Council’s Greenspaces service for an Assistant Café and Retail Manager to work at Tropical World in Roundhay Park.

You must be able to help manage the day-to-day operations of a café and retail shop, including but not limited to staff rotas, menu planning, ordering equipment and food, and inventory management. You should be knowledgeable about food safety, allergens, and café health and hygiene.

We are looking for people with a demonstrated track record of increasing the profitability of retail or café operations, as well as expertise leading a staff to provide exceptional customer service. Furthermore, individuals that can demonstrate originality and initiative in connection to forward-thinking retail concepts are preferred.

Job Description.

 

Job Purpose:

 

To provide day-to-day assistance management of a catering, retail, and/or hospitality facility in accordance with best practices and as an integrated element of the visitor attractions in which they are located. To provide flexible management and high-quality catering and retail services at Greenspaces-managed outlets.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

To assist with the ordering and control of all stock needed for the café and retail activities.

To assist in menu creation and costing.

To help manage and motivate employees, including ensuring that proper staff development is in place.

To aid in the creation of rotas and the submission of employee timesheets.

To help with the preparation of products for reselling.

To assist with the outlet’s fiscal control in compliance with Local Authority Financial Regulations.

To verify that the acquisition of goods and services complies with financial regulations, business policy, and legal obligations.

Assist in the planning and organisation of functions as required.

To aid in the connection with clients, suppliers, and other organisations in all parts of the business.

To ensure client satisfaction by providing efficient and friendly service.

To help ensure that the site is clean, clear, and in compliance with statutory laws.

To work in all departments and perform commensurate duties as needed.

To be able to work as a team and follow instructions as needed.

To do cover duties for the outlet manager as needed.

  • To guarantee compliance with the Food Hygiene Regulations 2005.
  • To wear suitable protective clothes as needed.
  • Attend necessary training courses / seminars as requested to maximise optimal efficiency.
  • To promote the Greeenspaces service’s aims by consistently providing high-quality service.
  • To ensure that operations always comply with the statutory requirements governing health and safety at work, hygiene regulations (food, premises, and personal), licencing regulations, and any other applicable legislation.
  • Assist as needed in the management of visitor centres, shops, and other outlets.
  • Additional responsibilities include managing a café outlet, visitor centre, or shop when the manager is not on site.
  • It should be noted that this position is subject to occasional revisions to include other commensurate activities and responsibilities in response to organisational change / review and to aid flexibility. The duties given are not a complete list and will include any additional duties within the spirit of the role as specified by the relevant supervisor.

 

RELATIONSHIPS

The position holder will be in charge of support staff at the outlet and will operate as part of a small team in a catering / retail setting. There will be regular interactions with members of the public.

 

Physical Conditions

The role will be based in one of our commercial locations, but flexibility is necessary to offer cover in any other outlet as needed.

 

SOCIAL CONDITIONS:

Hours: 37 hours a week across 7 days, with potential for evening and weekend work in addition to regular weekend hours.

SKILLS

The ability to communicate with a diverse range of people, both individually and in groups, at all acceptable levels.

Ability to oversee the day-to-day operations of the outlet in the absence of the outlet manager.

Ability to execute financial and cash controls.

Ability to create and cost meals.

Ability to order supplies as needed.

Ability to supervise employees.

Ability to create personnel rotas.

Ability to create simple components such as sandwiches, salads, and snacks, as well as to prepare and cook hot meals.

Ability to meet demanding timelines.

Ability to work flexible hours.

 

Knowledge/Qualifications

Knowledge of HACCAP, hygiene and food handling laws, and the Food Standards Act of 1999.

Knowledge of catering techniques.

Understanding of the cleaning methods for catering equipment.

 

Experience

Experience working as part of a team.

Experience working in a comparable workplace and performing similar tasks.

Experience supervising staff.

Experience implementing financial and cash controls.

 

Behavioural and other relevant traits.
