The University of Reading’s Department of Politics and International Relations is inviting applications for two permanent, full-time Lecturer positions in International Relations. These roles focus on teaching and research, with one position emphasizing contemporary war and conflict, and the other concentrating on international security more broadly.

  • Position Type: Permanent, full-time
  • Application Closing Date: 22 February 2026 (23:59)
  • Presentation Date: 13 March 2026
  • Interview Date: 16 March 2026

We are looking for outstanding scholars who can bring fresh, innovative perspectives to research and deliver engaging, high quality teaching in the area of international security. While we welcome a range of methodological and theoretical approaches, we are especially keen to hear from candidates with expertise in topics such as the evolving nature of war, contemporary conflicts, shifts in global security and order, or pressing new challenges including emerging technologies, climate and environmental security risks, and cybersecurity.

Successful applicants will pursue an ambitious and original research agenda in international security, with the potential to produce world class outputs that strengthen our submission to the Research Excellence Framework (REF). We particularly value research with real-world policy relevance and the capacity to generate impact beyond academia. Experience in securing external research funding would be a strong asset.

In teaching, you will contribute to core modules in International Relations and International Security, while also developing and delivering specialized, research-informed courses aligned with your expertise. Desirable teaching areas include international/global security, the study of war and conflict, or contemporary warfare and strategic studies.

You will also play an active role in the department’s Centre for Global Security and Governance, supporting its activities and collaborations. Additional responsibilities include student guidance and pastoral care, involvement in recruitment efforts, and general administrative contributions to the smooth running of the department.

The Department of Politics and International Relations is deeply committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment. We particularly encourage applications from underrepresented groups in academia, including women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, racialized minorities, and others who have historically been underrepresented in the field and within our department.
