The post holder will work in a busy and supportive Safeguarding & Children in Care Team as a Specialist Nurse for Children in Care at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, ensuring that the individual health needs of Looked After Children and Care Experienced Adults are met so that they can access appropriate health advice and services and be encouraged to live a healthy lifestyle. offering information, advice, and practical assistance in all areas affecting a child’s and young person’s health.
To be considered for this position, you must demonstrate collaboration skills and have post-registration clinical expertise with complicated safeguarding challenges, whether in an acute or community setting.
The selected candidate will gain knowledge in various elements of safeguarding and children in care, and as a team, we are eager to explore new ideas.
This function requires strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as the ability to operate efficiently and effectively in tough situations.
Furthermore, you must be able to operate under pressure, prioritise your workload, and deal with confidential and delicate issues professionally.

The successful candidate for Specialist Nurse for Children in Care will assist the Named Nurse for Children in Care in managing and co-ordinating the activities of the Children in Care Health Service, developing services as needed to ensure a seamless care pathway for children transitioning into permanence, adoption, or leaving care.
The Specialist Nurse for Children in Care will also assist the Named Nurse in coordinating health assessments, including quality assurance, implementing individualised healthcare plans, maintaining appropriate documentation and records, and conducting clinical audits to support future service development.
The Specialist Nurse for Children in Care will assist the Named Nurse in ensuring that the organisation follows effective safeguarding practice as outlined in primary legislation and supported by government strategy, national, regional and local guidance procedures, and standards.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated trust and the sole provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, servicing a population of 286,700. It provides inpatient and outpatient treatments at the Manor Hospital, as well as a variety of community services. Walsall Manor provides the entire range of district general hospital services under one roof. The £170 million expansion was completed in 2010, and ongoing upgrades guarantee that the Trust now has cutting-edge Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit capabilities. Work is already well started on the multi-million pound new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre, which will include a new Emergency Department (including a Children’s Emergency Department), a Paediatric Assessment Unit, an Acute Medical Unit, and an Urgent Care Centre. This is anticipated to be completed this year.

The role is diverse and will include:
Identifying health requirements and barriers to receiving appropriate services and support.
To conduct health assessments of children and young people (CYP) in compliance with established procedures.
Make appropriate recommendations to other agencies or do follow-up investigations to ensure that this vulnerable group does not lose their place on waiting lists or disturb existing arrangements.
To analyse health needs holistically and create a health plan tailored to the individual CYP’s physical, emotional, behavioural, social, and developmental needs.
To help carers implement the health plan.
Examine health-care strategies in light of the specific C/YP situations.
To ensure that health policies are implemented inside and outside of the borough.
To guarantee that health services for looked after children are provided in compliance with the service requirements.
To guarantee that services for looked-after children are established in compliance with national guidelines and policies.
To ensure that services for Looked After Children and Care Experienced/Leavers are delivered and developed in accordance with current evidence-based practice.
To work well with residential situations both within and beyond the borough.
To promote independent living for young people leaving care; to assist as the role requires.
To collaborate with accommodation providers for looked after children and care experienced adults, offering advice and support as needed.
Provide assistance, guidance, referrals, and advocacy to those leaving care.
To support the Safeguarding Team, complete tasks suitable to your band of post.
Provide support and guidance to more junior members of the safeguarding team, including the administrators.
The position holder will also be expected to provide bespoke Children in Care training.
Provided direct and indirect advice to colleagues on evaluation, treatment, and clinical services for Safeguarding and Children in Care.
Providing appropriate professional advice on matters, including those relating to child health and social care in general, as well as contributing to the operational/strategic and continuing planning of Children’s Services at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust.
Fostering a culture of employee involvement and empowerment, encouraging innovation and active participation in defining patient care services.
Responsible for maintaining the Trust’s aims and objectives, participating in groups, forums, and meetings as assigned by the Named Nurse for Children in Care, and filling in for operational/strategic meetings as needed.
Providing cross-coverage and support throughout the Safeguarding Service in accordance with the postholder’s professional responsibility and skills.
Ensure that the Administrative Team is subject to oversight.
Ensure that Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust has a training strategy that is consistent with the Intercollegiate Document and local expectations.
Ensure that rigorous and up-to-date local policies and guidelines are available throughout Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust.
Participating in internal major incidents and child safety practice reviews relevant to the function.
