Job Description
JOB DESCRIPTION
Astroscale is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Command & Data Handling Engineer for our location in Harwell, UK.
This is an interesting role with responsibilities that span the whole lifecycle of our spacecraft, from early design of electronic systems and interfaces to hands-on work, test plan development, and participation in AIV activities. Because the team is currently relatively small, the incumbent has the opportunity to play an important role in the C&DH engineering path.
This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to join a dynamic and fast growing company that wants to make a positive contribution to the rising problem of orbital debris, which threatens humanity’s continued use of space as an asset. Our mission’s technology is complex and demanding, with large amounts of data flowing through the system. Because the mission needs our spacecraft to move towards another spacecraft, it includes numerous distinct and important aspects inside the C&DH system.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the creation and design of Astroscale spacecraft’s Command and Data Handling Subsystems.
- Review and maintain subsystem requirements.
- Define and implement subsystem test and verification plans.
- Help define and monitor subsystem data and processing budgets.
- Test and prove the FMECA and FDIR processes.
- Help Collaborate with other teams at the subsystem and system levels to establish ConOps, ICDs, development, and verification strategies.
- Plan, prepare, and carry out electrical subsystem and system-level verification tests, including environmental testing.
- Collaborate with the UK-based Ground segment and operations teams to support our mission operations globally.
- Interact with and support the team’s partners and suppliers about the provision of C&DH equipment. Assist procurement engineers with specification, trade-off, and selection of C&DH equipment. Participate in the review of deliverables in support of the project’s milestones.
Essential skills and experience.
- Diploma; bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering or a related engineering/science area.
- 2+ years of commercial experience designing electrical and/or system-level Command and Data Handling Systems for satellites.
- Demonstrable expertise working with or creating systems that leverage industry de facto standards such as CCSDS, I2C, RS422, Spacewire, CAN, and others.
- Understanding of how C&DH systems function on spacecraft missions and their different electrical interfaces.
- Experience creating and carrying out test programmes for spacecraft avionics.
- Good understanding of system engineering and handling needs throughout the project lifecycle.
Desired Skills and Experience
- Experience in general electronics (analogue, digital, power), as well as microcontrollers/CPU and FPGA
- Experience or knowledge of protocols: RS232, RS422/485, SPI, I2C, CAN bus, Spacewire, and Ethernet
- Experience physically testing hardware and operating aircraft equipment in a clean room setting.
- Experience with GNSS and satellite time synchronisation.
- Experience analysing radiation tolerances and knowledge of radiation hardness assurance for low-earth orbit applications.
- Basic knowledge of the following areas: debris removal, end-of-life, and in-orbit service.
- While English is the working language in all Astroscale divisions, competency in spoken and/or written Japanese is considered a benefit.
Benefits
- Competitive base salary.
- Opportunity to collaborate with a highly talented, varied, and dynamic international team using cutting-edge technology.
- Flexible working arrangements around core hours in a welcoming and supportive atmosphere
- Hybrid working is available (based on individual position requirements).
- 25 days holiday (growing yearly up to a maximum of 28 days) plus 8 days bank holiday
- Life insurance and long-term ill pay.
- Private healthcare (a taxable benefit).
- Relocation Allowance
- Visa sponsorship for employees is considered.
- New modern office and cleanroom facilities.
- Regular social events
Location
