Overview of Project/Role
Places in London The Property Development (PD) division of Transport for London is in charge of developing TfL’s land throughout the city, including housing, mixed-use, commercial, and town centre developments.
We are hiring for the Design and Quality Manager position.
You’ll work on the Planning & Design team, assisting Places for London PD and Asset Management (AM) with design and sustainability issues, and ensuring that PD’s Sustainable Development Framework (SDF), Design Principles, and the GLA’s Good Growth by Design pillars are integrated into a variety of projects.
You will be a PD champion for sustainability and design quality, assisting the Residential, Build to Rent, Commercial, and Major Project delivery teams across PD and AM on a variety of sites.
Key Accountabilities
- Ensure that Property Development’s Sustainable Development Framework (SDF), Design Principles, the GLA’s Good Growth by Design pillars, and other briefing documents are followed and embedded in relevant projects.
- Working with project design teams and development partners to ensure that essential sustainability, design, and quality objectives for each scheme are met, and that design teams are challenged to innovate and improve on these objectives.
- Working with Places for London Development Managers and Planners to agree on the main sustainability, quality, and design objectives for each scheme, including site-specific design principles;
- Contributing to a capacity-development programme for Development Managers that focuses on urban design, sustainability, design processes, procurement, and construction (e.g., building visits, seminars, workshops, etc.).
- Organising design reviews with Mayoral Design Advocates (MDAs), which includes scheduling, design team briefing, presentation preparation, and communication with MDAs.
- Contributing to the creation of sustainability and design quality management strategies, project-level objectives, and innovative projects that showcase high-quality design, sustainability, and place-making across TfL’s portfolio;
- Collaborating with other TfL teams, notably Places for London and Spatial Planning, to bring together appropriate sustainability, design, and urban design skills.
- Managing SDF Analysts in the creation of SDF scorecards and reports for PD initiatives.
- SDF standards should be reviewed on a regular basis to ensure they are in line with industry best practices.

- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain and promote sustainability and design in an understandable and tangible manner.
Knowledge
- Qualified architect with proven expertise incorporating high sustainability requirements in projects.
- Excellent awareness of national, GLA, and London borough planning and environmental policy
- Excellent understanding of environmental measuring technologies such as BREEAM, HQM, Passivhaus, WELL, and LEED.
Experience
- Experience working with a variety of stakeholders to achieve a mission.
- Excellent written and presentation abilities, with expertise delivering reports and outputs to fulfil company objectives.
- Proven ability to comprehend and apply information from many sources, as well as effectively communicate it to decision makers.
- Capability to operate under tight deadlines in a setting with high expectations and pressure.
