Job Summary

The University Hospitals of Birmingham NHS Trust is looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and experienced candidate to join its well-established specialist breast care nursing department. The position will be primarily based at Solihull Hospital, although there will be chances for cross-site work. The position is full-time, however part-time or job sharing arrangements may be discussed. Secondments may be considered if the applicant is new to the field of work.

The position holder will collaborate with the team to provide an expert specialist service to patients diagnosed with breast cancer at all phases of diagnosis and treatment in a kind and sensitive way. With a dedication to providing high-quality holistic patient care, you will actively participate in clinical practice, patient caseload management, education, research, auditing, and other breast cancer-related professional activities.

The Breast team is dedicated to developing services that improve patient care and experience, and you will be eager to take an active role in this process.

The function entails working in both surgical, screening, and oncology clinical settings, as well as assisting in the coordination of patients’ pathways. These positions require someone with strong communication and organisational skills, as well as the ability to establish productive working relationships.

 

Main responsibilities, tasks, and abilities required

This position will require you to work as a key worker for cancer patients within a team of specialised nurses, thus you must have:

* At least two years of current experience at Band 5 or higher in a field linked to breast cancer.

* 1st Level Related Degree or Working Towards

* Good communication abilities.

* Capability to function as a key worker and as part of a team

* A willingness to pursue extra training, such as the Breast Care Nursing Course and advanced communication skills training.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

* Registered Adult / Child Nurse with the NMC Register.

* To have or work towards a comparable BSc qualification

Desirable

* To have or working towards advanced health assessment module—where applicable to the role.

* Advanced Communication Skills Training (ACST)

* Evidence of post-registration CPD / post-registration qualification in relevant area of specialisation or professional knowledge enhanced by specialist experience and short courses to degree / master’s level comparable FHEQ Level 6 /7

* Recognised mentoring course

* Breast Care Nursing Course (A11 or Equivalent)

Experience

Essential

* Evidence and capability to revalidate as required by the NMC.

* Significant post-registration experience, with at least 12 months at B6 or higher in a defined specialism.

* Extensive experience working independently at a specialty level.

* Evidence of accomplishments and career progress in the current position, as well as ongoing professional development/competence.

* Demonstrate expert knowledge supported by theory and CPD related to specialism.

* Working in a multidisciplinary and cross-agency work environment.

* Experience in a patient service user advocate role.

Desirable

* Experience in change management, both personally and as a facilitator.

* Experience with service development.

* Experience and enthusiasm for establishing educational programmes, teaching/assessing, and managing people in a clinical setting.

Additional Criteria:

Essential

* Able to describe the need to balance clinical burden.

* The ability to speak with a diverse group of health care experts on a variety of difficult and sensitive issues that necessitate persuasive and sympathetic skills.

* Ability to operate freely, manage/prioritize personal workload, supervise/evaluate and assess subordinate staff

* Competent in a variety of clinical skills and expanded practices relevant to the requisite area of practice.

* Able to work within the NHS Breast Screening Programme framework/requirements.

* Ability to work under pressure with competing priorities.

* Capability to conduct clinical audits, assess data, and create robust, measurable action plans to promote improvement or change.

* Demonstration of ability to create reports and papers for internal and external communication.

* Understanding of current evidence-based practice and its application to service and policy creation.

* Can demonstrate expert nursing knowledge and experience within the specialty, with the capacity to analyse, plan, administer, and evaluate specialist care offered to patients, as well as give advice and information to patients, family, and care staff

* Understanding of the current relevant NHS policy context for the specialisation.

Desirable

* Ability to work as part of a team of specialised nurses and take the lead on service initiatives.
