Job Overview:
Cornell University’s Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art is seeking an Assistant Preparator to join their dynamic team. This role involves supporting the installation and upkeep of exhibitions at the museum, which houses over 40,000 works of art spanning six millennia. With a focus on education and community outreach, the museum enhances teaching and promotes public engagement, making it a cornerstone of Cornell’s mission.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the setup and maintenance of museum exhibitions.
- Construct and maintain display units and special fixtures.
- Manage museum carpentry shop and related tools.
- Update databases for inventory, artwork location, and exhibition details.
- Safely handle and move artworks, supporting the Chief Preparator and museum staff.
- Provide carpentry and technical services, ensuring installations meet high-quality standards.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.
Work Hours and Location:
- Full-time, Monday to Friday, based on Cornell’s Ithaca campus at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art. Flexible hours may be arranged with approval from the supervisor.

Requirements:
- High school diploma with 2+ years of experience in carpentry, design, or related fields, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Computer skills and familiarity with safety standards.
- Valid NYS driver’s license.
- Ability to lift or move more than 50 lbs, climb ladders, and operate hydraulic lifts.
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least one year of carpentry experience, ideally in a museum setting.
- Experience using databases and CAD software.
- Training in art handling, security practices, and exhibition installation.
