The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) offers an exciting opportunity as a Wage Laborer/Flagger at our Hampden Sydney Area Headquarters. This position is perfect for individuals looking to get started with VDOT and is visa sponsorship eligible.

Job Responsibilities

This is a wage position, limited to 1,500 hours over a twelve-month period (May 1 through April 30), without state benefits. As a Laborer/Flagger at VDOT, you will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Flagging traffic and assisting in setting up work zones.
  • Performing manual labor in roadway maintenance work crews.
  • Driving pickup trucks and one-ton trucks.
  • Ensuring job safety and following safety protocols with personal protective equipment.
  • Performing minor repairs and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.

You will be expected to work outside regular hours during emergencies, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. Additional vacancies may be filled within 90 days of the closing date from this applicant pool.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge and experience with highway maintenance equipment, tools, materials, and methods.
  • Ability to read and follow both written and oral instructions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with equipment operation and preventive maintenance.
  • Knowledge in construction, maintenance, or related fields.
  • Experience with emergency operations such as snow removal, storms, or accident clean-ups.
  • Prior experience in roadway maintenance or construction activities.

Special Requirements

Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. H1B visa sponsorship is not available. You must meet the following:

  • Ability to work in outdoor conditions year-round.
  • Capability to perform manual labor, including frequent lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and DMV record verification.
  • Ability to wear approved safety shoes.
