About the Role
The Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) is seeking an inspiring and accomplished leader to join as Executive Director. This is a pivotal role to shape the Society’s strategic direction, support its charitable objectives, and promote the study of astronomy and geophysics.
As Executive Director, you will:
- Collaborate with the President, Council (Board of Trustees), and staff to drive the Society forward.
- Support governance by enabling elected officers and Council to fulfil their responsibilities effectively.
- Lead the implementation and evolution of the Society’s 2024-2029 strategy.
- Continue modernising the Society’s operations and fostering a transparent, forward-thinking work culture.
About the Royal Astronomical Society
Established in 1820 and incorporated by Royal Charter, the RAS represents the interests of astronomers, space scientists, and geophysicists. With approximately 4,000 Fellows, it:
- Advances the study of astronomy, geophysics, and related sciences.
- Publishes leading research journals.
- Organises scientific meetings and public engagement activities.
- Awards grants, prizes, and offers expert commentary to the media.
- Contributes to shaping the UK government’s science policy.
The Society operates with an annual income of approximately £5.5 million, employing 25 staff members.
Candidate Profile
Essential Knowledge and Experience:
- Proven management expertise in a similarly sized organisation.
- Experience working with a Board of Trustees in a voluntary, public, or private setting, and building strong relationships.
- Demonstrated ability to build, empower, and lead effective teams.
- An open, visible, and collaborative leadership style with strong interpersonal skills.
Desirable Qualities:
- A passion for science, particularly astronomy, geophysics, or space science.
- Visionary thinking to inspire and guide the Society’s mission.
