Job Description

Specialty Doctor – Acute Inpatient Psychiatry
Elmleigh Hospital, Havant, Hampshire

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
Permanent, Full-Time
Salary: £61,542 – £99,216 per year (depending on experience)
Reference: 348-MED-SAC-10315

Join our supportive and forward-thinking acute inpatient team at Elmleigh Hospital, located in Havant. You’ll work on either Ruby Ward (female, 16 beds) or Sapphire Ward (male, 17 beds), providing specialist care to adults during acute episodes of functional mental health conditions. This includes depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and personality disorders.

As part of a close-knit team, you’ll collaborate daily with two consultants, middle-grade and resident doctors, and a dedicated multidisciplinary group (nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, and more). Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve conducting thorough clinical reviews, contributing to and sometimes leading multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, chairing Care Programme Approach (CPA) reviews, preparing reports for Mental Health Tribunals, and delivering safe, evidence-based treatment and management plans.

The job plan includes 8 Programmed Activities (PAs) of direct patient care and 2 PAs for supporting professional activities. These SPA sessions support your continuing professional development (CPD), clinical audit, peer supervision groups, teaching, quality improvement projects, and contributions to service development.

We actively encourage involvement in clinical governance, teaching junior colleagues, and quality improvement initiatives. There are excellent opportunities to pursue supervision training, engage in research, work towards Section 12(2) approval under the Mental Health Act (with Trust support), and progress towards CESR if that aligns with your career goals. The Trust is strongly committed to your ongoing learning, wellbeing, equality, inclusion, and long-term career progression.

Key Responsibilities and Requirements

  • Carry out prompt and accurate administrative tasks linked to patient care, including precise recording of clinical activity.
  • Participate fully in the Trust’s annual appraisal process and internal CPD/academic programme.
  • Maintain full registration with the General Medical Council (with a licence to practise) and uphold professional standards at all times.
  • Work towards Section 12(2) approval under the Mental Health Act where appropriate.
  • Engage in annual job plan reviews with clinical and operational managers to adapt to service changes and modernisation.
  • Support junior doctors to comply with the New Deal, Working Time Directive, and safe working practices.
  • Adhere to Trust policies, procedures, and financial regulations, contributing to efficient service delivery.
  • Lead or contribute to CPAs, professionals’ meetings, tribunal reports/hearings, MDTs, and the creation/implementation of evidence-based guidelines, protocols, and quality improvements.
